You have probably come across recommendations of Bulldog Blocker as porn and adult content blocker on places like Reddit. Is the AI blocker as good as people describe? For the most part, yes, and I will explain why.
The primary selling point of using Bulldog Blocker is its AI-based porn detection. The app constantly inputs what you have on screen to detect if there is any porn or sexual imagery viewed in the app you are currently using. You have two modes on the detection, normal mode which is supposed to only detect porn and then you have strict porn which also detects things like women wearing revealing swimsuits, exercise clothes, etc.
The detection works well, and after just a second, Bulldog Blocker will “go backwards” in the app if it has detected sexual imagery, so you can avoid the inappropriate picture or video. You get a total of three strikes before Bulldog Blocker shuts you out of the app for 15 minutes.
You sometimes get false detections, which you will have to live with since it is machine learning (AI) based, but the team behind the app is constantly improving it, and you can send in your false detection for further improvement.
Bulldog Blocker also comes with a simple app locker that allows you to block yourself from using certain apps. You can also whitelist apps from being affected by Bulldog Blocker. My experience with the app locking feature is that it is very basic and quite slow, which could lead to ways for you to circumvent the blocker (I won’t tell you how for your own sake).
This is the feature I have used the least, so I don’t know how broad the website blocking is. I found early on that this feature on my phone allowed me to turn off the whole app from running in the background. Therefore, I have disabled it. I think a better way of doing website blocking is setting up a DNS on your phone instead.
So, how good is Bulldog Blocker in preventing you from bypassing the app to disable or uninstall it? Well, I think it is rather poor. The app comes with uninstallation prevention, which does work, but it is not good enough. The app locking feature is not advanced enough to prevent certain ways of bypassing the app to turn it off. It could be enough for you if you are very unaware of the features and settings your smartphone comes with, but I’d say you need additional blocking, which I will get to below.
Overall, Bulldog Blocker is a great app due to its AI detection feature, and that would be the main reason to use this app. The app locking feature is very basic and might do the job in your case. In terms of circumvention, the app has basic protection against it, and it will probably not take you that much time to figure out ways to bypass it.
I’d say it is still worth paying $40 per year for and if you combine it with an app like Lock Me Out that helps with preventing circumvention you are set in blocking porn on your phone.
