Lock Me Out has become a popular choice for Android smartphone users for blocking apps and reducing screen time. It is also a great way for you to block porn and adult content. Let’s walk through some of the main features.
Lock Me Out has two main ways for you to configure your blocks: schedule-based lockouts and usage-based lockouts. Schedule-based (called “Regular lockout” in the app) lockouts are exactly what they sound like: you are locked out from apps based on a schedule you set. You can set between what days and times the lockout is active, or if the lockout is a one-time lockout. The usage-based lockout is based on your usage of chosen apps. For instance, you can set it up so that if you use YouTube for 15 minutes, you are then locked out for 30 minutes. There is a lot of customization for usage-based blocks, which I won’t go through, so play around with them yourself and see what works best.
In a lockout, you can set up lists of which websites and apps are to be blocked. You also have the option to do the inverse, meaning you can set up a whitelist of apps and websites that are only allowed during the lockout. You also have the nuclear option: to only allow your lock screen. You will find that you also have the capability of blocking system apps, which is excellent since that will help you to prevent circumvention of Lock Me Out.
I find that the app blocking works great. Lock Me Out is very responsive if you open a blocked app, and it only takes a couple of milliseconds for you to be prompted with a message that this app is blocked. The website blocking is also good, but I have figured out a way to bypass it, so I do not use it.
The location-based lockout feature is one if not my favorite features with this app. This feature allows you to configure lockouts to be active only on certain locations. This is great if you want to be more productive or if you want to take precautionary measures to block porn while home. This adds that additional customization, so the app locking is not a nuisance when you are on the move.
Some other lockout features you can also find and enable are:
Lock Me Out has a great bypass and circumvention prevention. The “Prevent uninstallation and tampering” option found in the settings is properly thorough and blocks more or less all ways for you to uninstall or disable the app. Other features, like removing blocked apps from the recent apps menu, also help a lot in circumvention protection. Lastly, I want to highlight, which I already mentioned above, the capability of blocking system apps. This is where you, for the most part, will find ways to disable or uninstall Lock Me Out or other blocking apps.
Overall, Lock Me Out is a great app for you to reduce screen time or block adult content. It is a great standalone app that does not need any additional apps for you to achieve freedom social media, doom scrolling, and porn. It is worth the one-time fee of around $45. However, if you want to take other precautions you can check out my guide on how to setup your phone to block porn (but this guide also works as well for reducing screen time in general).
